Depression Treatment

Most of us experience periods of feeling “blue” or “down” at some point. That’s just part of the human condition. Feeling “down” doesn’t always mean you’re depressed. But when these feelings linger or intensify, it’s always a good idea to seek out depression treatment and start by talking with a professional therapist.

Depression manifests itself differently in different people. So, for example, you may feel sad and teary and not know why. Or, you may feel angry at everyone and everything.  My job as a depression therapist is to help you sort through these feelings, explore changes that might improve your life, and help you get on the road to feeling better.  If you are an older adult who is dealing with depression, please visit my geriatric depression page.

In assessing someone for depression treatment, I first just listen. I want to hear and understand how you’ve been feeling, when the feelings occur and how you’ve dealt with them. I may also use one or more depression scales as part of the assessment. I will also explore various lifestyle issues, such as diet and sleep, to see if these areas might be contributing to your feelings of depression. During this initial phase of depression counseling, we will get to know each other and I will provide a safe and secure environment where we can thoughtfully explore your issues together. There are instances when I may suggest that you be evaluated for medication assistance, although this is not the first avenue I pursue.

After completing a thorough assessment we will then begin the process of working on issues that we have uncovered. During our depression counseling session, we will look at old patterns that might be preventing growth and happiness. We will look at various activities that might be added that could be helpful. Together we will work to help you feel better, become stronger, and make necessary changes.
